Gold in the Desert
Artist: Michael-Alexander Stoll
100 × 120 cm – Acrylic on canvas – Original artwork

In “Gold in the Desert”, the heat of a desert landscape condenses into an abstract field of colour: shimmering reds and ochres, with radiant patches of gold and deep, almost oily dark zones in between. The work speaks of visible gold in the sand – and of the invisible “black gold” that has made entire regions wealthy.

Technical description:
The painting is built up in many layers of squeegee technique. Horizontal and vertical bands of colour are repeatedly pulled over one another, partially reopened and then glazed again. This creates dense, tectonic structures that recall geological strata, ancient trade routes or pipelines. Luminous yellow and gold passages lie like metallic inclusions above warm reds, brick and ochre tones, while deep, almost black brown layers and dark blue suggest veins of oil beneath the surface. Finely broken transitions reveal how often the surface has been reworked – this is a canvas that has been laboriously painted, not created in a single, quick gesture. The canvas is stretched on a stable stretcher frame with 3.5 cm depth, giving it a clear, object-like presence on the wall.

Colour psychology & spatial impact:
The dominant red, orange and ochre tones convey warmth, energy and a quiet, focused passion – more like embers beneath the surface than a glaring fire. The gold passages stand for value, wealth and permanence without becoming decorative; they merge organically with the colour fields and recall golden reflections in the blinding midday sun. Dark, almost black areas and deep blue bring grounding and depth to the composition – visually the “black gold” lying beneath everything. In interiors, “Gold in the Desert” creates a powerful yet grounded atmosphere: it warms, focuses and makes a clear statement without becoming visually overpowering.

Sealed with Swiss museum-quality varnish — hand-sprayed in two layers.

Suggested placement:
This work is particularly well suited to meeting and conference rooms, executive offices, high-end reception areas, law firms, consulting and medical practices, as well as design and creative studios where a consciously chosen, valuable art statement is desired. In private spaces, “Gold in the Desert” is highly effective in living and dining rooms, open loft environments or a generous entrance area, where its warm tones virtually welcome visitors.

Price structure & collector value:
With its 100 × 120 cm format, “Gold in the Desert” belongs to the present yet easily integrated sizes of contemporary abstract painting – large enough to carry a wall on its own, while still flexible enough to combine with other works. Within the complete works of Michael-Alexander Stoll, it is one of the established key pieces of his earlier creative phase: a painting that, even before the later large formats, already demonstrated how confidently the artist commands colour, layering and pictorial depth. For collectors, it offers a strong entry point into the world of Stoll’s work – with a clear, recognisable visual language and a narrative theme that is internationally understandable.
